Question Basic Assumptions When you are writing a paper or thinking through a problem, you do not want to base your analysis only on what you know. We all have basic assumptions which inform our everyday lives. Academic quality work must extend beyond basic assumptions towards analysis and synthesis of information. Check your assumptions at the door and do some research with an open mind. We all have ways of making life simpler. These are called heuristics or otherwise, mental shortcuts. While these techniques were helpful when we were hunter-gatherers, we now live in a society that calls for critical thinking. When you are writing a paper or working on an exam, make sure to have a one up on your mental biases, so they will not lead you astray. Reading more, becoming educated, and becoming more informed about how others think can allow us to understand our cognitive biases more readily. Remember to Think for Yourself Although you will be drawing on academic literature and information when you do your research and write papers, it is also important to remember to think for yourself. While this does not mean incorporating your biases into your writing, it means that you must analyze a situation using a critical lens. Go back and ask those basic questions. What is missing? Is there a gap? What is this research saying? Does it make sense concerning other research on the topic? Think through the literature using your power of deduction. You will write a stronger paper, and your professor will be able to see that you can do more than regurgitate the literature. John Dewey truly believed in the values of students learning to think for themselves. He warned against the tendency towards training people to fit into boxes in society, fearing that it would omit the potential for social growth and democratic development. A great quote from Dewey captures his sense of the value of critical thinking: Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. As an active contemporary leader in the realm of critical thinking, TED-Ed has developed a five-step process to help improve critical thinking skills. The following is a summation of the process, however, for more on the topic, TED-ed has developed an accessible video. TED-Eds 5-Step Process for Critical Thinking: 1. Formulate your question. In an academic setting, this looks like creating a thesis statement or hypothesis. 2. Gather your information. Do your research/review the literature. 3. Apply the information. Ask yourself what concepts are included? What assumptions are made? Consider if your interpretation is logically sound 4. Reflect on the implications of this information. 5. Explore other points of view. Critical Thinking is a Part of Our Everyday We participate in critical thinking every day. When we look out the door in the morning and see dark clouds, we might assume that it is going to rain later, so we choose to put on a raincoat. That is critical thinking. We can apply these same skills in academia by using the knowledge we already have to make sound arguments about data. As Dewey suggests, we are always engaged in the process of learning and critical thinking, whether it is inside the classroom or in our daily lives. Tradeoffs and traps In addition to weighing these tradeoffs, there are other related factors affecting the decision to either export or locate a plant overseas. To compete in their market, for example, some countries require that some form of local infrastructure be in place. :sometimes you run into government contracts where the only way to contribute a product in that country is to have it made locally, in China, for instance, you pretty much have to build something there in order to enter that market said Moos. Certain products also dictate the international sales strategy to be taken. A company makes drinking glasses, you will want to manufacture them in the country it wants to sell for drinking glasses generally speaking are pretty cheap to make and expensive to ship. Other factors include time, the distance to the market, and price. Certain products require short lead times and thus may best be delivered via locally maturated plant. This is where you get into issues like transp ort rotation costs tariffs and duties, labor expenses and how much it costs to build a plant, said Moos. Another factor is the skill of the labor force in the market being considered. Oh have to question whether or not the labor pool -no matter how low-cost-can be trained to do the things you need, Moos added. Best laid plans Perhaps the best way for many companies to enter a foreign market is to first export there, but with an eye towards building overseas in the future. Some companies may follow two roots in this regard: acquiring a going venture in one country but starting one from scratch is another. Mercer management, for example, built its overseas consultation business via both strategies. In Europe, we concluded that there were sound opportunities to build by acquisition, while in Asia we felt the best way to proceed was by opening our won offices De novo. Moos said. Companies seeking an international presence often must choose between [their] own dedicated sales force versus third-party agents doing the work for them. Others, such as University games, follow an international sales strategy using third-party distributors. We identify the foreign markets we want to penetrate, and then form a business venture with a local distributor that will give us a large degree of control, Moos said. In Australia, we expect to run a print of 5 000 board games. These we will manufacture in the US. If we reach a run of 25 000 games, however, we would then establish a sub-contracting venture with a local manufacturer in Australia to print the games. Smack dab between exporting and overseas manufacturing is another alternative: foreign product assembly. Sometimes this is a better option because the duties in a particular country may be low on components but high on finished goods, Moos said. In a market in which a company has a fairly good production and manufacturing costs by getting a local vendor to do the work for you. CAP International favors full-scale overseas manufacturing to either foreign product assembly or exporting. CAP uses local personnel and managers almost exclusively when operating overseas, they look for people who understand the markets and can compete very effectively within them. Local managers help you understand local government regulations, which can tricky. The days dragged on, and nobody was there for me other than my family and Vicky, my girlfriend. Practically every other day I was having a severe panic attack which made me start to miss school. I sank deeper and deeper into a pit of depression and anxiety as I fell behind in my studies. As my self-esteem dropped my views on my life did as well. With nothing going my way it seemed like I was getting in the way of everyone else around me, dragging them down with my sorrow. I felt like running away from everything was my best opinion, but I knew it would not help me in the long scheme of things. In my parents eyes, the next step for me was getting help. They looked into every possible therapy and counseling center they could. They began to make a binder full of medications and doctor recommendations. Nothing was off limits if it meant helping me find inner peace. By the end of April, I had visited the emergency room three times to be in a safe environment opposed to my bedroom where I had the privacy to suffer alone. I can still vividly remember the high-tech hospital beds that smelled like freshly washed laundry. It made me feel comfortable amid the chaos. After that third visit, my mom sat me down and through tears, cried ââ¬Å"There is a spot that just opened upâ⬠¦ at the Centerâ⬠¦for Mental healthâ⬠¦ and if we respond today, you can get help there.â⬠Is this the right thing to do? What if I didnââ¬â¢t know if this was a positive step to take or not, but I reluctantly agreed, ââ¬Å"I will go, itââ¬â¢s for the best.â⬠I wanted to stay in the comfort of my home, but I knew I couldnââ¬â¢t get better without some drastic change in my life. No matter how hard I tried I could not break free from this feeling of worthlessness, I needed something new, something different. At the Center, my life was completely different. I couldnââ¬â¢t open a door without asking a superior.Cellphones, shoes, or contact with anyone on the campus was not allowed. I met others in various states all trying to find themselves and change their outlook on life. The first night there I sat listening to a girl scream herself to sleep while a group of leaders tried to help her remain calm. In the back of my mind, I still hear her cry for help when I think about the Center. Looking back on my experience, I reflect on the good and the bad that came from being admitted to the Center. Talking to the friendly faculty, I was able to better understand how life would be like after I left the safety of the Center. Although I hated every moment away from independence and my family, Iââ¬â¢m grateful for being able to participate in the program. I will especially remember the group decisions I was a part of where we learned how to use skills to control stress in our life. If it wasnââ¬â¢t for my decision to go to the Center, Iââ¬â¢m not sure if I would be alive today. Today I still deal with stress and anxiety, but I have experience, family, and skills that I have learned to help me successfully control my anxiety. It was hard to realize that anxiety is something you canââ¬â¢t get rid of, but I know that by changing the way I think about situations I can not just handle adversity but excel in it. One of the many skills that I learned at the Center was mindful thinking. That means being open minded and focused on positive thoughts. To do that you have to first be honest with yourself. For me, that meant realizing that I have weaknesses. I am not perfect. Then you share these observations with others and develop a plan to get better. Personally, I talked to my parents about these areas of difficulty and developed a plan to make these weaknesses, strengths. Finally, you act, fail, and progress. College will require me to use mindful thinking because there will be stressful scenarios. I will stumble. That is the truth, but I know I can persevere and grow by overcoming these challenges.

Elvis made his first appearance on Theà Ed Sullivan Showà on September 9, 1956. Getting Booked Elvis Presley had already appeared on other national television shows (such as on Stage Show, The Milton Berle Show, and on the popular The Steve Allen Show) when Ed Sullivan booked Elvis for three shows. Elvis pelvic gyrations during his appearances on these other shows had caused much discussion and concern about the suitability of airing such provocative and sensual movements on television. Although at first Ed Sullivan said he would never want Elvis on his show, Sullivan changed his mind when The Steve Allen Show with Elvis as a guest had about twice as many viewers as Sullivans show that night (they were competing for the same audience since they were in the same time slot). After negotiating with Elvis manager, Ed Sullivan paid Elvis the huge sum of $50,000 for appearing on three of his shows: September 9, 1956, October 28, 1956, and then on January 6, 1957. Sullivan Didnt Host and Elvis Not Actually on Set For Elvis first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday night at 8 p.m. on September 9, 1956, Ed Sullivan himself was not able to host since he had recently been in a very serious car accident that left him in the hospital. In his place, Oscar-winning actor Charles Laughton hosted the show. Elvis was also not on location in New York for the show since he was in Los Angeles for the filming of Love Me Tender. Laughton hosted from New York and then when it came time for Elvis appearance, Laughton introduced him and then cut to the stage in Hollywood with Elvis. Elvis Performance Elvis appeared on a stage with large, artistic guitars as decoration. Wearing a plaid jacket and holding his guitar, Elvis thanked Mr. Laughton and the audience and then said,à This is probably the greatest honor that Ive ever had in my life. Theres not much I can say except that hope it makes you feel good and we want to thank you from the bottom of our heart. Elvis then sang, Dont Be Cruel with his four back-up singers (the Jordanaires) followed by Love Me Tender, which was the not-yet-released title track from his new movie. During this second set, Elvis sang Ready Teddy and then ended with a portion of Hound Dog. Throughout Elvis entire performance, viewers could hear girls in the audience screaming, especially when Elvis did his special twitch or swung his hips or swiveled his legs. Elvis appeared to enjoy himself, frequently smiling or even laughing, which made him seem friendly, sweet, and hunkyà - depending on who was watching. Censored During Elvis first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show,à the cameras stayed mostly from the waist up during the first half of Elvis appearance, but during the second time he appeared that night, the camera widened out and the TV audience was able to see Elvis gyrations. While many have felt that Elvis was censored by only showing him from the waist up onà The Ed Sullivan Show, that really only happened during Elvis third appearance, on January 6, 1957. For some still unknown reason (although there are a lot of rumors as to why), Sullivan allowed Elvis to only be shown from the waist up during that third and final show. It Was a Breakthrough Performance Elvis appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show was a major success. Ryanââ¬â¢s father and mother split up when Ryan was four leaving his mother to bring him up along with his elder brother, Damian, and younger sister, Charlotte. During Ryanââ¬â¢s childhood, his mother had a succession of relationships with men, two of whom had, like Ryanââ¬â¢s father, been violent towards her. One of them, a man called Dave, who didnââ¬â¢t work and spent most of the time drinking at home in front of the television, had taken a strong dislike to Ryan and gave him regular beatings, including on one occasion with a baseball bat he kept behind the door, ostensibly to deal with burglars. Ryan had spent some time in hospital as a result of this beating. Ryan also suspected that Dave had been sexually abusing his younger sister but his mother had threatened to throw him out if he didnââ¬â¢t ââ¬Ëstop making things upââ¬â¢. From the age of nine Ryan had tried to spend as little time as possible at home. Hanging out on the streets, he came into contact with a group of older boys who were amused by his fearless, devil-may-care attitude and adopted him as a kind of mascot. Through his contacts with this group, Ryan began drinking alcohol and then got into taking drugs. By the age of 13, Ryan was a hardened drinker and a regular truant. On the rare occasions
